Sales of second hand cars during the first three months of 2012 reached their highest level for three years, new figures have revealed.
Data released by Experian and the DVLA showed that a total of 1,741,860 were sold in the first quarter of the year, the largest amount since the same three-month period in 2009 when sales totalled 1,813,588.
The Q1 figure is also an increase of 14.7 per cent on the final quarter of 2011 and 0.2 per cent higher year-on-year.
Sales rose in all car categories, with the exception of 4x4s, which suffered a 1.3 per cent drop on the previous quarter. Second hand MPVs experienced the most growth, with sales soaring some 26.7 per cent to 103,415 units.
Ford remained the most popular brand, with the Ford Focus the biggest selling used car of the first quarter. Some 78,812 used Focus were sold in the three months, putting it ahead of the Vauxhall Corsa and the Ford Fiesta .
The Vauxhall Astra was the fourth biggest seller, followed by the VW Golf, BMW 3 Series, Renault Clio, Ford Mondeo Estate, Peugeot 206 and VW Polo .
